Earth Day 2007

The Walt Disney Company has formally celebrated Earth Day since 1992, and in 2007, over 200,000 Cast Members, employees, and Guests participated in Earth Day activities from Hong Kong to Southern California.

Walt Disney Parks and Resorts

In recognition of Earth Day, Walt Disney Parks and Resorts hosted celebrations and events around the world.

  • Disney's Animal Kingdom threw a Party for the Planet in partnership with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). This day-long event featured interactive displays; appearances by Jiminy Cricket and Pipa, the talking recycle can; environmental crafts; games; and giveaways.
  • Several Atmosphere Entertainment groups put on "earth-friendly" shows for Disneyland Resort Guests, and Crush, the star of the Turtle Talk with Crush attraction at Disney's California Adventure, added environmental commentary into his act.
  • Disney VoluntEARS at Disneyland Resort Paris welcomed disadvantaged children to spend a day planting aromatic flowers in a special garden at the Resort. Disney Landscaping specialists then told the history of these plants to sensitize children to biodiversity.
  • Cast Members at Hong Kong Disneyland Resort sent 25,000 Guests on an Environmentality scavenger hunt to answer environmental trivia, and presented an Earth Day button to each Guest who answered all of the questions correctly.
  • Jiminy Cricket helped Guests sailing aboard Disney Cruise Line salute Earth Day on the high seas. Children signed an environmental pledge to start living "green" on the ship and at home, and families participated in Jiminy Cricket's Environmentality Quiz Show to test their knowledge of environmental facts.

Media Networks

Earth Day provided a great opportunity for The Walt Disney Company to expose viewers and listeners to environmentally themed content. Disney Channel aired environmental programming on Earth Day during new episodes of "Higglytown Heroes," "Charlie & Lola," and "Johnny & the Sprites." In addition, Diane Sawyer hosted an "ABC News" and "20/20" program titled "Planet Earth 2007: Seven Ways to Help Save the World," in which anchors reported live from seven continents, each offering user-friendly tips to combat climate change. Radio Disney aired several green-themed public service announcements nationwide including general environmental tips and a Disney Fairies Earth Day promotion.

ESPN

ESPN co-sponsored Bristol Clean Up Day, an annual community initiative to beautify the town, and as part of this effort, employees picked up litter and trash along a one-mile stretch of road close to the campus. Employees also hosted an Earth Day event in the ESPN Café to provide information about recycling procedures and promote recycling on the ESPN campus.
