Disney has actively educated Cast Members and employees about the importance of environmental action and opportunities to contribute within the Company. The following resources and educational efforts, in addition to many others, increased interest and participation with Environmentality programs and activities around the world.
The second annual Environmentality Summit brought together nearly one hundred Disney leaders Companywide to discuss environmental, business unit, and corporate action plans, and together, attendees addressed some of today's most pressing issues including climate change, greenhouse gas management, greening supply chains, waste management, green building, and animal conservation. The group also discussed how to leverage environmental strategic planning and new program development to improve financial savings. The Summit will continue to take place on an annual basis to engage key internal stakeholders in the environmental progress we have made and will continue to make moving forward.
In 2007, Disney's Environmental Affairs launched a 70 page, environmental resource center on the employee portal, commonly known as The HUB. The internal, Environmentality site shares policy updates, event listings, and breaking news with employees and Cast Members on a regular basis. The site also hosts the new A to Z Recycling guide, critical frequently asked questions (FAQs), screensaver and desktop downloads, and other engaging tools, helping individuals realize opportunities to take action. The Web site is an evolutionary resource that will grow and change as Disney rolls out new initiatives and programs.
Educational events took place throughout Disney to inform employees on the latest eco-trends and encourage active participation in environmental programs. Disney's Environmental Affairs along with Corporate Strategic Sourcing and Procurement hosted the Environmental, Diversity, and Commuter Product Roadshow to familiarize southern California-based Cast Members and employees with eco-friendly and minority products and to increase awareness of clean air commuting methods. On average, vendors showcased over 200 products containing environmental- or commuter-related attributes. The event increased environmental product purchases in general, and Disney Commuter Assistance counted 120 new enrollments in the period directly after the events.
The 2007 Walt Disney World Environmental Products and Services Expo took place in December to showcase numerous environmentally responsible companies, organizations, government agencies, and Disney departments to nearly one thousand Disney attendees. In addition, the event presented hundreds of Cast Members with a reusable canvas bag when they pledged to refuse paper or plastic bags at the supermarket.
