Conservation Heroes

The DWCF also honored nine individuals as "Conservation Heroes" for their extraordinary personal dedication to conservation. To date, 27 Disney Conservation Heroes worldwide have been recognized for their unique and significant contributions to animals and habitats in local communities. Each recipient was nominated by his/her colleagues, who represent organizations which have been funded by DWCF. The honoree and the nominating organization share a $1,000 award. Below are the amazing stories of three significant Heroes from 2007:

  • Marchilio Ack: (nominated by Fauna & Flora International in Belize) After starting his career at a logging company, Marchilio realized the detrimental effect unsustainable forestry methods have on the environment. He began working with the Ya'axche Conservation Trust as a Community Ranger. He now works as a Field Supervisor, where he currently manages 15,000 acres of forest. Marchilio also recruits local hunters, farmers, and loggers to become rangers and trains them in biodiversity monitoring techniques.
  • Jonathan Kang: (nominated by Pan African Sanctuary Alliance (PASA) in Cameroon) Jonathan sought employment at the Limbe Wildlife Center as a teenager, offering to work for free. Today, he has become one of the most knowledgeable primate experts in Africa and currently serves as Limbe's Animal Husbandry Supervisor and Head Keeper. Jonathan's passion for chimpanzees was most apparent when he heroically endured a rogue chimpanzee attack and returned to work after a long recovery.
  • James Munyugi: (nominated by Lewa Wildlife Conservancy in Kenya) James, who recently passed away, worked for many years in northern Kenya to establish community conservancies and was an integral part of saving wildlife across Kenya. He expanded his conservation efforts through the Northern Rangelands Trust and Lewa. James' involvement, energy, and ability to work with divergent groups will forever be his legacy.
