Case Study: Helping the Turtles

In September 2007, more than 120 loggerhead sea turtle hatchlings dug out of their nest chamber on Castaway Cay and made their way to the ocean. This event was the first record of hatchlings on the island since Disney arrived at Castaway Cay eleven years ago and was extremely significant due to the dwindling loggerhead sea turtle population. When Castaway Cay Crew Members discovered the nest in July they immediately took inventory and guarded the nest so the eggs could incubate undisturbed. Crew also assisted in the release of seven straggler hatchlings, an important task to help a depleting population.

Overseeing the success of the sea turtle nest is only one step that Castaway Cay Crew Members take to conservation efforts. Two marine biologists reside on the island and continue to actively participate in ongoing marine conservation projects. Furthermore, by teaming with one of Disney's Animal Programs Research Biologists, Castaway Cay Crew Members have transplanted long-spine sea urchins to keep reefs surrounding Castaway Cay healthy and productive.

Watch as Disney Cruise Line Crew Members help baby turtles to sea from Disney's private island, Castaway Cay.

Additionally, Crew Members continue to educate thousands of Guests who visit the island on the importance of protecting the natural world of the ocean. Many of those Guests have responded by contributing to Disney Wildlife Conservation Fund.
