Disney's Animal Programs team has contributed significantly to the propagation of species, knowledge base about animals, and rescue of injured wildlife. Disney's Animal Programs oversees the health and well being of all animals at Walt Disney World Resort and are responsible for thousands of animals, including endangered and threatened species. The team is committed to excellence in animal care and welfare through an integrated approach to animal care where veterinary services, science, and animal care teams work together to make certain that each animal receives the best care available.

The animal care teams at Disney's Animal Kingdom and The Seas at Epcot welcomed some new members to the Disney Family in 2007. Both The Seas and Disney's Animal Kingdom are accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) and are involved in many AZA "Species Survival Plans" (SSPs). SSPs are cooperative breeding and management projects to help endangered or threatened species. Disney programs have been instrumental in the cooperative breeding of many endangered animals, contributing significant numbers of births to endangered and threatened species. Some of the 2007 births include:

  • One southern white rhino
  • Four southern gerenuks
  • Six pink-backed pelicans
  • Two lesser green broadbills
  • Eight Key Largo woodrats
  • One marabou stork
  • Three sable antelope
