Disney business units have long focused on energy conservation by reducing power consumption through operational changes, implementing new technologies, and adjusting operations to meet or exceed local and national regulation requirements.
The Environmental Council is overseeing a comprehensive new assessment of energy consumption patterns as part of efforts to fully understand the Company's greenhouse gas (GHG) output. Such detailed measurement of energy usage is critical in order to effectively reduce the Company's emissions. This process is expected to be completed in 2008.
While the initial assessment based on preliminary data is underway, Disney business unit leaders are intensifying plans for achieving significant reductions in energy use, while at the same time accommodating future business growth. A key part of this process is developing energy efficient design standards and construction practices by Disney Corporate Operations and Real Estate (CORE) services, which builds and operates all corporate real estate.
Meanwhile, a wide variety of initiatives are underway throughout Disney to cut electricity use and to support alternative fuels and renewal energy markets. For example in 2008, Disney installed two massive solar arrays atop a sound stage and a walk way at The Walt Disney Studios, reducing the amount of fossil fuel-generated electricity at the Lot.
