Case Study: X Games Environmentalityâ„¢
In its third year, X Games Environmentality (XGE) had a bigger impact than ever before, encouraging employees, participants, and fans alike to act on the environment with record-breaking results. Winter X Games 11 (January 2007) delivered an impressive 68 percent waste diversion rate, an 18 percent increase over Winter X Games 10 (January 2006). X Games 13 (August 2007) delivered a staggering 83 percent waste diversion rate. Contributing to this success were the following initiatives:
- Spectators and staff sorted recycling, composting, and trash items into specially marked bins, helping to recycle more than ten tons of cans and bottles between both Games in 2007.
- Nearly two tons of leftover food from staff catering was donated to local food banks from X Games 13.
- X Games partnered with a local company to convert all left over food grease into biodiesel at X Games 13.
- XGE introduced X Rider, an initiative that rewarded spectators who carpooled four or more to a car or used LA Metro to get to The Home Depot Center in Carson, California.
- XGE employees hosted an education table in the event staff catering area at both Winter X Games 11 and X Games 13 to motivate participation in environmental efforts on and off site.
- 10,000 pounds of wood and drywall were donated to the Habitat for Humanity Home Improvement Store in Gardena, CA.
XGE continues to innovate new and successful waste reduction initiatives at both venues and in the office!
