The 2003-2004 school year marked the 10th anniversary of Jiminy Cricket's EnvironmentalityTM Challenge in California. The program, which began as a partnership between The Walt Disney Company and three state agencies, now features a collaboration of 20 state agencies and departments, and two federal partners, the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the United States Fish and Wildlife Service. To date, more than 1 million students have participated in the Challenge, which continues to reinforce the values of environmental education and awareness, ensuring that the future generation will grow up thinking and acting with the environment in mind.
Teacher David Neubacher and his class of fifth grade students from El Verano Elementary received top honors this year for their environmental education project, "Protectors of the Earth." As part of the project, the class developed a single-stream recycling program at their school that is managed by all El Verano fifth grade students. They also collaborated with expert scientists to research deformed frogs from local creeks. In addition, the class conducted an extensive letter writing campaign urging elected officials to protect the Van Hoosear Preserve. Finally, the class conducted monthly local creek clean-up and water-testing efforts and organized an assembly to educate other students about waste management.
For their efforts, the class received a "Jiminy" award at a special celebration held in their honor at the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim. The memorable ceremony featured Roy E. Disney, Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Walt Disney Company, and Jack O'Connell, California Superintendent of Public Instruction.
