Jiminy Cricket's EnvironmentalityTM Challenge set sail last fall when Officers and Crew Members from Disney Cruise Line's Disney Magic ship officially launched the program at a kick-off press event onboard the ship November 11, 2003. The Cayman program is a partnership between Disney Cruise Line and The Cayman Islands Department of Tourism (DoT). The Departments of Environment, Environmental Health, Education and the local National Trust are also working in collaboration with Disney Cruise Line and the Cayman DoT in spreading the word and encouraging students to become good stewards of their environment.
As a part of the initiative, local third, sixth and eleventh year students are given the opportunity to participate in the two-part program. One Grand Prize winning class is selected from each grade level. Nearly 1,500 students from the three grade levels were invited to participate in the 2003-2004 program, committing to an "EnvironmentalityTM Pledge" and submitting class projects that addressed global issues incorporated into classroom learning.
On May 11, 2004, thirty-seven students from the local Cayman community were recognized as Grand Prize winners at a special awards ceremony. The winning students received JCEC award medals during the ceremony hosted by Captain Tom Forberg, and Walt Disney World Ambassador, Juan Aviles. The children were then treated to lunch in Animator's Palate, where a flood of Disney characters, including Jiminy Cricket himself, were on hand to congratulate them on their accomplishments.
