In order to tackle environmental concerns in their community Mrs. Putney's fifth grade class from Tradewinds Elementary in Coconut Creek formed the Butterfly Brigade. The students brainstormed ways to help the environment by establishing a school-wide recycling plan and by persuading their local government to establish an Adopt-A-Street pilot program in their city.
They requested recycling bins, from the county, for every classroom and office at their school. By changing the mind-set of their entire school's student body, they were able to save 112,320 trees in the first 2 months!
Mrs. Putney's class trained the fourth grade students in their recycling "work" to ensure that their environmental project will continue once they leave Tradewinds Elementary and move on to middle school.
They instilled a sense of Environmental Citizenship in their community by not only persuading local officials to create an "Adopt-A-Street" pilot program with their school but also challenged them to expand the program to other schools in their district.
The students' project met a variety of curricula and instructional goals, incorporating writing, mathematics, science, reading, language arts, technology, cooperative learning, art, statistics and critical thinking.
