The 2003 winners were from Clay Springs Elementary School in Apopka, Florida. Mrs. Jody Brown and Mrs. Diana Eagles' classes celebrated their accomplishments at Disney's Animal Kingdom and were honored in a ceremony featuring special guest, Roy E. Disney. For their project entitled "Consequences of Conquest," the students focused on habitat restoration and restored nearly two acres of school property to its natural state, a sandhill habitat. The project demonstrated an immediate benefit of the return of native plants to a disturbed sandhill site.
Short-range benefits included the return of enough suitable vegetation to the habitat to support birds, insects and reptiles that once inhabited the area. Long-range benefits will be the education and involvement of the entire Clay Springs school community in the conservation of natural habitats.
