JIMINY'S CHALLENGE SETS SAIL FOR CAYMAN ISLANDS
Cruise Line takes the program to the Cayman Islands, a popular port on the Disney Magic seven-night Western Caribbean itinerary.
Nearly 1500 students from three grade levels were invited to participate. Third-year (equivalent of second grade), sixth-year (fifth grade) and eleventh-year (tenth grade) students will have a choice to take the EnvironmentalityTM Pledge or to do the pledge along with a project.
"The best part about the program is that it is a fun and hands-on experience for the children," Gail Brown, Disney Cruise Line Community Relations manager, said. " It makes them think and act more environmentally and teaches them to care about the earth and the community. If they start at a young age, it will become part of their lives."
Third year students will be encouraged to do an art project that addresses the topic, "Why we need water?" Six-year and eleventh-year classrooms will be encouraged to address a global environmental issue and incorporate geography, language arts, mathematics, visual arts and science into their projects.
The program packets went to the schools in December and the classrooms that elect to do a project will have until March to submit their applications. Disney Cruise Line will be partnering with the Cayman Islands Department of Tourism to implement the program. Officials from the Department of Environment, the Education Department and the National Trust will serve as the judging panel to evaluate the projects.
There will be a grand prize for each grade level, which will include a luncheon onboard the Disney Magic, a question and answer session with the Captain and Environmental Officer as well as meeting Jiminy Cricket.
Disney Cruise Line Cast and Crew Members are anxious to be a part of this very successful event. Started in California and expanded to Central Florida and Hong Kong, Jiminy Cricket's EnvironmentalityTM Challenge has become one of the most recognizable projects within The Walt Disney Company.
"To be able to take an established Disney environmental program and give it a Disney Cruise Line identity is very exciting for us," Gail said.
