At Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, community service is integral to our culture. Walt Disney himself frequently visited children in hospitals and guided the company's resources toward supporting organizations that help children in need. Disney also has a long tradition of supporting the arts and institutions that develop the next generation of artists.
In addition to our charitable giving, Walt Disney Parks and Resorts supports the local economy by creating jobs, utilizing local goods and services and contributing tax revenue. As a leader in the travel and tourism industry, we advance the goals of the broader industry and develop public-private partnerships that benefit our larger community. Our Cast Members are active in their communities, volunteering their time and talent to strengthen the neighborhoods in which they work and live.
Walt Disney Parks and Resorts periodically conducts economic impact studies to understand how our operations contribute to improving our communities. We share key findings from these studies in local community reports. As an example, in 2007 Disneyland Resort Paris and the French Government conducted an economic impact study as part of the resort's 15th anniversary. The study found that Disneyland Resort Paris generates nearly 50,000 direct and indirect jobs each year in France. Additionally, the taxes generated by Disneyland Resort Paris over its 15 years of operation amounted to €3.58 billion.
We partner with local, national and global nonprofit organizations to support programs that help children and families. In addition to financial support, we provide in-kind donations such as character visits, park tickets and event support to organizations and communities around the world.
Celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2008, the Disney VoluntEARS program provides opportunities for Cast Members to contribute their time and expertise toward making a positive impact in their communities. The program encompasses each of our locations, with thousands of hours dedicated by our VoluntEARS to support hundreds of projects across the globe every year.
Sharing our Expertise
Our Cast Members offer a broad range of creative and technical talents. We share that expertise on a pro-bono basis to benefit our communities. For example, Walt Disney Imagineering is working with the Trust for the National Mall to help improve the National Mall in Washington, D.C. Imagineers also contributed to the design of a new wing of the Florida Hospital for Children operated by Florida Hospital in Orlando, incorporating Disney characters, music and interactive elements to create a calming and nurturing environment for its young patients. Cast Members also serve on the advisory boards of nonprofit organizations, benefiting these groups with their unique insights and expertise.
To support public diplomacy efforts, Walt Disney Parks and Resorts created a video entitled "Welcome: Portraits of America" that was given to the U.S. government to create a more welcoming experience for travelers to the country. The video is currently shown at U.S. embassies, consulates and airports and aboard some flights arriving in the country. We have also lent expertise to address queue management, customer service and signage for government agencies that serve the public.
