As Chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, Thomas O. Staggs oversees the strategy, operations and creative development of the Company’s iconic travel and leisure businesses. Disney Parks and Resorts comprises five resort destinations in the United States, Europe and Asia and a sixth currently under construction in Shanghai, a top-rated cruise line, a popular vacation ownership program, a family resort on Oahu, Hawai’i and an award-winning guided family adventure business. Mr. Staggs leads a global team of more than 122,000 Cast Members, Crew Members and Imagineers who all share a singular focus – creating unforgettable experiences that provide Disney guests with shared memories that last a lifetime.
Mr. Staggs was named Chairman of Parks and Resorts in January 2010 and has led the segment through the largest period of expansion in its history, while generating record revenue, profit, and attendance levels. Over the past two years, Disney has launched two extraordinary new cruise ships, the Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy; begun construction on Shanghai Disney Resort, the first Disney vacation destination in mainland China; opened Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa, in Hawai’i; opened two of three new lands at Hong Kong Disneyland; begun the phased opening of the largest expansion ever at the Magic Kingdom at the Walt Disney World Resort; and completed the multi-year expansion of the Disneyland Resort with the opening of Cars Land and Buena Vista Street at Disney California Adventure Park.
Prior to assuming his current position, Mr. Staggs served as Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of The Walt Disney Company. He played a crucial role in numerous strategic and operating initiatives, including the acquisitions of Capital Cities/ABC, Pixar Animation Studios and Marvel Entertainment. As CFO, Mr. Staggs spearheaded the realignment of Disney’s performance goals toward the combination of profit growth and strong long-term capital returns and free cash flow. He also led the Company's efforts to drive greater cost and capital efficiency across the organization and to put in place company-wide environmental and healthy food policies. Mr. Staggs has been praised by Wall Street for his financial and communications skills and was consistently voted the entertainment industry’s No. 1 CFO by Institutional Investor magazine.
Mr. Staggs joined Disney in 1990 as Manager of Strategic Planning and quickly advanced through a series of positions of increased responsibility and was named CFO for the Company in 1998. He earned a bachelor’s degree in business from the University of Minnesota and an MBA from Stanford Graduate School of Business. Before joining Disney, he worked in investment banking at Morgan Stanley & Co.
