HKDL: Clean the Tung Chung Mangrove on World Environment Day 2009
(Hong Kong, 5 June 2009) More than 100 enthusiastic volunteers from the
Tung Chung community, Hong Kong Disneyland Resort, Hong Kong
International Airport, Ngong Ping 360 and Hong Kong Wetland Park, joined
forces today – World Environment Day 2009, to clean the Mangrove at Tung
Chung Bay.
These four parties jointly organised the "Clean the Tung Chung Mangrove on
World Environment Day 2009" to celebrate this special day. The event was
also supported by the Tung Chung Safe & Healthy City, Islands District Office
and community leaders.
The Tung Chung Mangrove is in close vicinity to the neighbouring community,
including the airport, Ngong Ping 360 and Hong Kong Disneyland Resort.
Mangroves are diverse eco-systems that play a crucial role in ecology, such
as generating food chains. The 2.7-hectare mangrove that the volunteers
cleaned today supports different species of mangrove, coastal plants and
organisms.
"Lantau Island's green and scenic environment is a big attraction to visitors
from local and overseas. The Mangrove at Tung Chung Bay is one of the
most popular scenic spots on Lantau Island. Today's event is a major joint
initiative to beautify the natural environment and the community," said Ms
Chau Chuen Heung, Vice-Chairman of the Islands District Council at the
event.
"This event sets a good example of how businesses can collaborate with the
community in carrying out environmental protection and education initiatives.
We look forward to having more initiatives of this nature," added Ms Chau.
Special guests of the event included: Mr Byron Lam, Islands District Officer, Ms
Chau Chuen Heung, Mr Andrew Kam, Managing Director of Hong Kong
Disneyland Resort; Mr Howard Eng, Executive Director, Airport Operations of
Airport Authority Hong Kong; Mr Morris Cheung, Managing Director of Ngong
Ping 360 and Ms Sunny Chow, Acting Executive Director of Hong Kong
Wetland Park.
After two hours of enthusiastic work, tens of bags of rubbish were collected.
Following the advice of environmental experts, the rubbish will be sorted for
proper disposal or for recycling.
